Enterprise Pitch

Two-sentence explanation: This weekend there will be the Nez Perce County Fair, held in Lewiston, Idaho. The fair will have various events, classes, and competitions, but one of the more unique parts of the fair is that it is a 4-H event. This means that students from the 4-H program will be presenting things that they helped make in the fair. This will include things such as crops, flowers, arts, and livestock. Finding out about this peaked my interest in the 4-H program as I had not heard about it before and it is an international program that helps youth learn through hands on experience.

Evidence: At this point I’ve talked to the manager of the County Fair. He explained what will be going on at the fair and how this is a big event for the 4-H program. The students will be presenting their work to the public and for many students it will be their first time doing this. There is a lot of evidence that the 4-H program is very successful in helping youth, this event should give me an idea of what they have been working on and how the program is run.

Why now: The Nez Perce County Fair is this weekend. Like I’ve said, this event is a good way to learn about the program and also write about the types of events that the 4-H program is involved in.

Interviews: So far I’ve only talked to the manager of the county fair. He explained what the 4-H program is and how involved they will be in the county fair.  I’d also like to interview students that are part of the 4-H program, parents whose kids are in the 4-H program, and the University of Idaho leadership groups that organize many of the 4-H events. I’ve also found the information for the 4-H Latah county extension (208-883-2267, email latah@uidaho.edu), for the State Director (Jim Lindstrom, 208-885-7276) and one of the program specialists (Shana Codr, 208-885-6321, scodr@uidaho.edu). A lot of the program is organized through the University of Idaho and so I should also be able to get follow up interviews with the club that runs it through the University.

Format and Length: Written story that will be between 500-750 words. I plan to introduce the topic with information/description of the fair and continue on to explain how the 4-H program was involved in the fair and how the program is run.
